BIOPHILIA SERIES, 2022

Biophilia is a series of ten scanographic works created from plants gathered on walks through my immediate landscape in late summer 2021. Most of the botanicals came from wild places close to home: fields, roadsides, ditches, laneways, and the edges where plants grow largely on their own terms. Three of the pieces weave in cultivated garden flowers, bringing in the brighter colour and visual drama we tend to associate with beauty we have selected for. Each composition was arranged directly on the glass of a flatbed scanner and revealed only once scanned into the computer, a process that involved working backwards, upside down, and partly by instinct. Enlarged beyond life size, these small plants become intricate and monumental, inviting a closer look at the structures, textures, seeds, softness, resilience, and variety that usually pass beneath our notice. The series is built on awe: the feeling of encountering something vast in the things we most often walk past.
